Why has the school set up an Intergenerational Activity Centre?
Dr Hinchcliffe, Consultant Psychiatrist at NELFT has identified some very exciting international research which demonstrates that projects bringing together young children and older adults can have multiple benefits for both generations and also the wider community. Whilst this has been demonstrated in the USA and Japan, there are very few examples of this effective practice in the UK other than short term projects.
How is the Centre organised?
The activity centre is based at Downshall Primary School. There is a designated social lounge for participants and there are two half hour sessions in the Reception classes. There is also a final session with some of the older pupils. The activity centre runs on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday between 10am and 1pm. Participants may partake in as many activity sessions as they wish. Tea, coffee and biscuits are provided throughout the morning and a two course lunch is available at a charge of £3.50. |
