An Introduction to our Governors

Shabana Shaukat

Ms S Shaukat - Chair of Governors

I have been working for the Redbridge Safeguarding Children's Board for the last 5 years.  I grew up in Yorkshire, studied speech and language therapy at a University in London, then moved to Redbridge after getting married 12 years ago.  I have 3 children who attend Downshall Primary School.

I joined the Governing Body at Downshall in May 2013.  My motivation for becoming a Governor arose from my interest in education and the opportunities a good education can offer children.  Also contributing to the work of the Governing Body is my way of giving back to my community; to support the educational experience of the children at Downshall and inspiring them to become upstanding members of our community.

Ali Hai(1)

Mr A Hai - LEA Governor/Parent

I am a Chartered Accountant and Chartered Tax Adviser.  I was a Councillor for the London Borough of Redbridge from 2010-2014.

I have lived in Redbridge all of my life and attended Downshall Primary School.  I have 2 children who also attend Downshall Primary School.

As an old boy of Downshall Primary School, I get a great deal of satisfaction by helping the school and its pupils strive to achieve the highest education standards.

Naila Imran

Dr N Imran - Parent Governor

I am doctor of medicine by profession but have been home giving all my time to the upbringing and education of my children. I moved with my family to the Redbridge Borough around 9 years ago and since then have been linked with Downshall Primary School initially, as the parent of children attending the school and later on as a parent governor. I have always been actively involved with the PTA and events run by them. This motivated me to take the role of parent governor at Downshall Primary School and to extend my support in a positive way. I knew this would give me an insight on how the school is run and that I would would be able to support the Headteacher in improving the school. I am well known to the community so the role of parent governor helps the links to bring the school closer to the wider community and fill any communication gaps that might exist.

Nausheen Khan

Ms N Khan - Parent Governor

I have had the privilege of being a parent governor at Downshall Primary School since 2013. I was born and brought up in east London, completing all my education in local schools. I graduated from Queen Mary's university in Biochemistry and went on to pursue a postgraduate qualification in education. I have been working as secondary school Science teacher for 11 years. I have two children who attend Downshall Primary school.

I took on the role of a parent governor as I felt it was time for me to contribute to the community by working with the school to better the most important years of our children's lives.  I am passionate about working in education and I feel it is important to create strong links between parents and the school so that we can work together in providing our children with the best opportunities in life.

With the changes taking place in curriculums and policies I am excited about working with the school and parents further to ensure that we, as a community, and school can successfully adapt and improve.

Mrs Bhattacharjee(1)

Ms O Bhattacharjee - Parent Governor

I have lived in Redbridge for the past 10 years and consider it a safe place.   There is a sense of harmony amongst the residents - be it whichever community they come from. At Downshall Primary School multicultural diversity is handled very efficiently. The children feel safe which helps them to build a secure future. The main reason I was motivated to stand as a parent governor was to be more involved with the institution as both my children attend Downshall.

I have a Masters Degree in Mass Communication but currently am a full time mother and work only part time. Previously I have worked for almost 6 years in Motor accident claims.

Turinder Toor(1)

Ms T Toor - Parent Governor

I have worked for many years in the marketing and business development sector within the publishing and events industries, most recently in professional services.  I have lived in Redbridge for the last 18 years and I have 3 children, one of whom still attends Downshall Primary.  I have always taken a keen interest in the school as well as keeping myself informed of the education sector.

It is this interest that motivated me to want to become a Governor and give back to my local community.  I think it is so important that everyone is given the same opportunity to learn and succeed.  I am committed to ensuring that I assist the Governing Body with providing academic excellence as well as building closer relationships with the whole school community.
